Strategic Planning & Positioning
The Framework
A solid strategic plan is
a brief, simple document that guides the entire organization.
Strategic planning is about making deliberate decisions, based
on context, and about focus. It is as much about what an organization
does not do, as what it does do. Strategic goals define the
desired outcomes, given an organization's mission, vision,
values, position, and markets. A strategic plan becomes the
basis for staff and board meeting agendas. If the organization
is not routinely discussing progress towards strategic goals,
it is not discussing the critical work that must be accomplished.
External, internal, and market
conditions are essential elements in designing the plan. Typically,
in a one or two-day retreat setting, board and staff make
strategic decisions and create the plan. At the end of the
day, participants walk out with the plan outline in hand.
A follow-up session is effective in developing the annual
work plan or implementation plan.
